I began “Arab Spring” one day as a sketch with no particular theme or title in mind–just a simple rough drawing, and larger than I usually work. When I returned to the sketch the next day, I was about to start to correct it, make it look right, to move toward finishing it–when something in me said “stop.” Curiously–though pretty much every detail of it is wrong–I liked it. I checked someone else’s reaction and they also said it is interesting as a “draft,” like it is. So that’s how I left it. And I named it “Arab Spring” because the Arab Spring of 2011 was going on just then and it was such a wonderful thing and it, too, was unfinished.
